Sao Tomé and Príncipe

Have you ever heard of the outstanding Sao Tome and Principe? No? Then follow our review and discover the magic hidden secrets of this tiny tropical paradise. Nestled in the Gulf of Guinea, approximately 250 km off the West African coast, the little-discovered islands of Sao Tomé and Príncipe, officially known as the Democratic republic of Sao Tome and Principe, form an archipelago together with Bioko and Annobon islands. Due to their volcanic origin these islands are blessed with magnificent looks, boasting fantastically abundant vegetation, vast landscapes embodied in dense forests, historic colonial culture, tropical jungles inhabited by exotic birds, palm-fringed crystal clear beaches and, above all, warm welcoming hospitality.

Discovered and claimed by Portuguese in the late 15th century, Sao Tomé and Príncipe cover a land area of nearly 964 sq km, more than five times the size of Washington DC, sustaining a population just over 176,000 inhabitants (according to 2010 estimate), most living in Sao Tomé- the picturesque capital and the largest city in the country, boasting Portuguese colonial architecture and plenty of attractive parks.

Sao Tomé and Príncipe enjoy an equatorial climate featuring high temperatures and humidity, with one rainy season (October to May). March is considered the wettest month, while June to September experience dry and cool weather, the temperature ranging around 28°C, and are considered the best months when the main tourist season begins.

Opened its doors to tourists in 1987, the islands of Sao Tomé and Príncipe have still remained untouched and undiscovered by the tourist trade, providing perfect relaxation for those who want to be isolated amidst the pristine natural beauty, and offering many wonderful places to explore. In these stunning islands you will find a wide selection of tourist attractions, including the town of Sao Tome, Principe Island, spectacular beaches, Roças and Plantation houses, birding, diving, big fishing, whale watching and other land and water activities.

Sao Tomé Town (meaning ‘Saint Thomas’) is famous for its vibrant history and fascinating culture. It is home to the Presidential Palace, several cathedrals, the Fisherman’s Church, sandy bays as well as wide boulevards wind along the waterside. Sao Tome International Airport is also situated in the town. In Sao Tome you will have the chance to experience real diving and snorkeling, boating, and simply walk along gorgeous sandy beaches. Do not miss out the many amazing waterfalls of Sao Tomé, which are a ‘must go and must see’ spots. The town is best known for the Tchiloli play.

The quite diminutive and yet beautiful Príncipe Island located over 145 kilometers north to Sao Tomé Island, covers an area of about 139 square kilometers, housing the highest Pico de Príncipe Mountain with its peaking reaching 948 meters. Santo Antonio is the main and the most intriguing town of Príncipe, best known for its well preserved colonial architecture. Once plantations, the north and center of the island are now largely reverted to forest.

You can find a wide variety of accommodation facilities offering first-hand experience of the history, culture and life of the islands. Accommodation types in Sao Tomé and Príncipe include a few local resorts, hotels, plantation houses and guesthouses with varying price ranges, best suited for any traveler’s needs and budget. Hotel Miramar is the most notable resort, famous for an excellent restaurant where you can try the best African and European cuisines and a full sized elegantly designed swimming pool surrounded by breathtaking greenery.

Socotra Island
« Reply #79 on: July 01, 2012, 12:31:08 PM »

Socotra Island

The northwestern part of Indian Ocean houses one of the world's finest archipelagos, the mountainous Socotra, where people are as beautiful as the land. Characterized by unique spectacular vegetation and breathtaking unspoiled natural beauty, Socotra Islands form part of the Yemen republic and are located about 350 kilometers south of the Arabian Peninsula. Covering a land area of 3,650 square kilometers, and populated mainly by Muslims, Socotra comprises the administrative districts of Hadibo and Qalansiya, which also include the islands of Abdul Kuri, Darsa and Samhah. Hadibo is the administrative capital of Socotra where most people have settled down. Though Hadibo houses only 4 hotel accommodations, which are very simple and far from being big and luxurious, and very few public restrooms with simple eating facilities, nevertheless, Socotra is considered a majestic and blissful island.

People speak of Socotra as the 'jewel' of biodiversity in the Arabian Sea, boasting tropical sunshine, exotic flora and fauna (with more than 900 species of plants), gorgeous beaches, as well as pristine coral reefs offering enticing scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities.

The climate in Socotra Islands is tropical desert, with temperatures hovering between 37C in summer and 29C in winter. Socotra experiences hot summers and short, rainy winters. April, July and August are the driest months, while December is the wettest month when the monsoon season begins bringing strong winds and rain showers occurring across days.

Some interesting facts about Socotra:

  • The Socotrans greet each other by touching their noses.
  • Socotra has been known for pearl fishery since the earliest times.
  • Socotra has been a refuge for pirates for over centuries.
  • You can find 5 wildlife reserves in Socotra.

The islands are recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site. Though Socotra is small in size, it has so much to offer; from historical monuments to wildlife reserves, impressive volcanic caves, sun kissed beaches, rich marine life and last but not least, amazing landscape. Below are some of the most famous places to visit in Socotra:

  • Qualanisya is a small fishing village, a 'must go' place where you will have the opportunity to be close to the spectacular Shoab Beach, situated on the southwestern shore of Socotra. The charming village is home to traditional houses and narrow alleyways, the incredible Qualanisya beach and the Detwah Lagoon which is perhaps one of the most beautiful spots on the whole island.
  • Arhner (Arrarr) is another fascinating part of Socotra, boasting enormous sand dunes, beautiful beaches, coral cliffs, fantastic rocks and small oases, nestled on the shore of the Arabian Sea.
  • The Endemic Dragon's Blood Tree situated high up on Diksum Plateau in the centre of the island is one of the iconic natural features of Socotra. The tree is so named because any possible injury to the bark results in a deep red liquid that excretes from the scar. Here you can explore and experience Socotra's exotic nature, enjoy the fabulous panorama of the Daerhu canyon and swim in the freshwater pools.
  • Haghier Mountain, located in the northwestern part of the island, is the highest mountain reaching 1525 meters, offering beautiful landscape and a wide variety of different trees.
  • Wadi Shoq is another attraction in Socotra, where you will find palm plantations opening into rocky areas, which are a good locality for Socotra Scops Owl, a small, heavily streaked, grey owl heard readily in the evening, as it usually begins calling before dusk. On some of the taller palms you can find black-crowned Night-Heron, a relatively scarce species on Socotra.

Other adventures that are typical of the islands are fishing and sea tours, trekking and hiking tours, camel trekking and ride, camping, bird watching tours, great selection of water activities including kitesurfing, surfing and windsurfing, and diving.

If you have ever wanted to find yourself isolated in a tropical island, surrounded by breathtaking beauty, Socotra is a perfect destination for you.

Sea breezes keep the islands relatively cool. Rain showers can occur throughout year, especially between the months of May and November. Summer months are characterized by high humidity. Warm, sunny weather, gorgeous beaches, fresh air, unspoiled nature, jaw-dropping tropical jungles and friendly atmosphere are some of the typical features that make both islands ideal vacation destinations.

St. Kitts-Nevis 'must do' adventures include outstanding hiking, rain forest and volcano tours, eco-safari tour, nature trail explorations, heritage and historic tours. Because of the topography of St. Kitts-Nevis, there are many mountains, craters, hills, rivers and valleys to explore and experience. Brimstone Hill Fortress, one of the oldest sites in all of the Caribbean is something you shouldn't miss out. It's a well-restored 38-acre fortress and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Other St. Kitts-Nevis adventures include playing golf, bird watching and walking along the white, black, or gold sand of the beaches, relaxing by the sea, and a hopping nightlife on the Strip. And if you are somehow tired of land activities, the islands offer plenty of adventurous and fascinating water-based activities, including snorkeling, scuba diving, deep sea fishing, water skiing, body surfing, windsurfing and ocean-kayaking.

Whether your vacation calls for historical attractions, activity adventures or simply rest and relaxation, St. Kitts-Nevis offers everything to make your vacation even more memorable.

Four Seasons Nevis is the only luxurious, high-end property on the island, popular with business travelers, couples, families, beach visitors, honeymooners and travelers with pets. (Source: Wikipedia)

(Source: Wikipilipinas)

Boracay Beaches

Main Beaches: The White Beach and The Bulabog Beach

Boracay's two primary tourism beaches, White Beach and Bulabog Beach, are located on opposite sides of the island's narrow central area. White Beach faces westward and Bulabog Beach faces eastward. The island also has several other beaches, these are: Punta Bunga Beach, Puka Beach, Diniwid Beach, Puka Shell Beach, Balinghai Beach, Cagban Beach, Banyugan Beach, Ilig-iligan Beach, Manoc Manoc Beach, Tulubhan Beach and Tambisaan Beach.

The White Beach

The White Beach is the main tourism beach. It is about four kilometers long and is lined with resorts, hotels, lodging houses, restaurants, and other tourism-related businesses. In the central portion, for about two kilometers, there is a footpath known as the Beachfront Path separating the beach itself from the establishments located along it. North and south of the Beachfront Path, beachfront establishments do literally front along the beach itself. Several roads and paths connect the Beachfront Path with Boracay's Main Road, a vehicular road which runs the length of the island. At the extreme northern end of White Beach, a footpath runs around the headland there and connects White Beach with Diniwid Beach.

The Bulabog Beach

This beach comes alive during the early months of each year when windsurfers skim through its waters. It is also known as the windsurfer's paradise. This is the island's secondary tourism beach. This is a 2-km long beach where you can also find some nice hotels and resorts, but it is only quieter and less developed area. This is where most of the water sports activities are done, like kiteboarding and windsurfing, jet skis, parasailing, and other famous water sports activities. It is only about 5-minute walk to the D' Mall area and 10-minute to the White Beach. http://www.boracay-paradise.com/boracay-island-paradise-beach-philippines.html

Boracay Beach Attraction

Boracay Beach, in 1970’s, was just nipa huts scattered along its shores – a far cry from currently everything scattered everywhere. Droves of people visit Boracay Beach all year round, peaking at the summer months of March, April and May. Stalls selling clothes, crafts, food, drinks and everything you need forge an almost uninterrupted line along Boracay Beach. Establishments in Boracay Beach provide lodging, massage, beauty treatments, internet services, and even henna tattoos.

An amazing food selection in Boracay Beach includes French, Indonesian, Thai, Chinese, American, Swiss, Korean, Indian and Philippine cuisine. Sailboats and windsurfers for hire are available in Boracay Beach for the more adventures. Rental shops offering diving gears and bicycles increase the options for exploration of Boracay Beach. http://www.philippinetravel.ws/philippines-beaches/boracay-beach-philippines

http://www.tourismnewsinfo.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/beautiful-beach-in-boracay-philippines.jpg

Boracay Island, seven kilometers long and one kilometer wide at its widest, is world famous for much more than mesmerizing sunsets. Its main beach is so pure that the sand beneath one's feet stays cool under its tropical, sun-drenched shoreline. Additionally, this butterfly shaped island paradise has countless other attractions, both natural and man-made.

For natural adventurers, Mount Luho offers those who successfully challenge the 100-meter ascent to its peak with panoramic views, while closer to sea level is Dead forest, where dead tree trunks fill a still water pool and create an eerie scenario. There is also Bat Cave, where everyday at dusk thousands of bats awake and fly off in an entertaining display of undisturbed wildlife.

Considered a landmark and featured dozens of times on international and local publications, Willy's Rock is an oddly shaped volcanic rock formation that juts out of the clear water a few meters from the western part of White Beach. To take in many other attractions, Boracay can also be explored on horseback or motorcycles available through many outlets. Devoted hikers on the other hand are sure to be fulfilled by the extensive network of trails around the island.

Natural to the island's geographical gifts are water sports - skiing, surfboarding, parasailing, banana boat riding and a roster of others, not the least of which is diving which takes you to Boracay's many underwater attractions. Schools of tuna, pelagic fish and several species of sharks can be encountered at Yapak 2 dive site, for example, which is only a few minutes from Boracay's white sand beach. This is a good site for experts but there are multiple venues for beginners and every level in-between.

Boracay's main attraction is its shores, so it is only natural that White Beach has a range of "cousin" beaches. Diniwid Beach is a small and quiet enclave accessible through a scenic cliff side footpath, while Manoc-Manoc Beach has captivating views.

Finally, Boracay presents a pulsating nightlife and international class dining via more than 250 establishments operated by locals and foreigners (from dozens of different countries).  http://www.bluehorizons.travel/corporate/resort-hotel-beach-boracay-island.shtml

Tokelau Islands
« Reply #88 on: July 05, 2012, 02:20:53 PM »

Tokelau Islands

No large hotels, stores, restaurants, no hustle and bustle of a city life, just miles of sand, turquoise water, plenty coconuts, the sun always smiling and happy, friendly people. This is what Tokelau means. This outer-island Polynesia is at its finest welcoming people seeking a relaxed, tranquil leisure by the sea.

Tokelau is a Polynesian word meaning "north wind". Its origin is connected with the fact that sailing ships could get to Tokelau only when the north wind blew, which is very rare in these latitudes.

Tokelau is a dependent territory of New Zealand located in the Pacific Ocean between New Zealand and Hawaii. Tokelau comprises three atolls - Atafu, which is the largest city on the islands, Fakaofo and Nukunonu.

The atoll of Atafu consists of 42 islets. The inner lagoon of the island is rich in fish and crustaceans, which makes it an enjoyable place for diving and snorkeling. A warm welcome and friendliness of the locals, their unique music and dance rituals, customs and cuisine, language and history will be welcoming the tourists visiting this atoll.

The atoll of Fakaofo consists of different small islands, most of them covered with lush coconut palms. The shores of the islands are quite varied - in the south and west there are not too many shallow beaches of pure white coral sand, while many northern and eastern parts are covered with coral sand. The lagoon water is very pure, so right from the shore blue caves can be seen, fringed with coral array of fantastic shapes, which flit among colorful tropical fish. With its rich underwater flora and fauna it makes a wonderful place for diving.

Atoll Nukunonu also has a wonderful lagoon dotted with numerous small reefs and full of small fish. Alternatives to snorkeling or fishing here can be different trainings of climbing palm trees without the aid of technical devices - a rare skill, to be up to a height of about 15 meters trunk of the palm, which is absolutely smooth and has no branches. The rest of your time in Nukunonu you can just lie on the numerous beaches of all shapes and sizes, stretching along the perimeter of the lagoon, or take lessons of traditional canoeing. Extreme lovers will not be disappointed, as at this atoll fairly unusual methods of marine fisheries have survived: only in this region can be seen fishing of sharks "by a bag" (a bag of blood-soaked canvas is just thrown into the water, and when a predator begins its attack, they fearlessly jump into the water and wind the fish head with that bag, depriving it of the ability to move and breathe), or an octopus fishing "on a jug" (tied to a rope a ceramic vessel with a narrow neck filled with scraps of fish is lowered into the water. When the octopus creeps to eat its usual delicacy, it cannot get back any more). Many of the inhabitants of the atoll will show the ancient art of "kilikiti" (a sports game, a sort of cricket), or "games with fish", when using special techniques and devices a gaggle of reef fish gathers, demonstrating the visitors here all the same "tricks" that we used to see in the circus ring. And, of course, here you can find plenty of excellent dive sites.

The Luana Liki Hotel in Nukunonu is the only hotel and public eating center in Tokelau. Many tourists would just choose staying with some of the islanders, asking them in advance. The wonderful tropical weather gives the opportunity to visit the islands of Tokelau any time of the year and have a wonderful pastime here.

Tonga Island

Tourists, who love to admire wonderful nature of an island and have a crazy, active rest at the same time, should make their travel destination Tonga. Tonga is the center of the formation of the Polynesian cultures; it is here where the peoples of the sea originated, here where many old traditions and customs still exist. This amazing tiny island, hidden in the vast Pacific Ocean, will surprise its guests with the beautiful nature, beaches, hospitable people with their traditions and customs.

Tonga is an island located in the south-western Pacific Ocean, stretching from north to south between the islands of Samoa and New Zealand and from east to west between the Cook Islands and Fiji. Tonga consists of more than 160 islands, the largest and most important of them being the islands of Tongatapu, Vava'u and Ha'apai.

The nature of Tonga is very distinctive. On these volcanic islands many orchids and hibiscuses can be found, which give the landscape of the island a special, easily recognizable flavor. The most common tree in Tonga is the coconut palm tree, represented here by more than two dozen species. The fauna is also very diverse and interesting: the largest animal is the flying fox. There are about 30 species of birds in Tonga, like pigeons, parrots, corncrake, herons, ducks, and frigates. The rich underwater world off the coast of Tonga, with hundreds of species of fish - from the colorful coral fish to sharks will always attract fans of diving. Diving in these waters is considered an exotic pleasure, even for experienced divers because of the great depth of the surrounding waters. Tonga's coral reefs are among the most beautiful ones in the world. Sixty miles south of the island of Tofua the main volcanic islands of Tonga are situated. It is like a real miracle to see a ridge of underwater volcanoes continuously active, continually giving birth to new islands and destroying some of them at the same time. There are several reservations, which protect coral reef ecosystems and the reefs themselves.

Tonga is a real paradise for fans of outdoor activities. Here you can descend into the caves (including submarines) on Tongatapu, Vava'u and Eua, explore the underwater caves of Ha'apai, make an ascent on foot on any of the volcanic cones of the western group, or take a canoeing or kayaking tour to the reef areas around the islands (especially around the protected waters of Ha'apai). Surfing here is as good as in any Pacific island. At any time of the year a good wave can be found at Ha'apai and Vava'u. If you choose Tongatapu, perfect places for surfing can make Haatafu Beach and Niutoa Beach.

Tongan waters are also excellent for sport fishing. Here, next to the reefs, there are abundant shoals of barracuda, tuna, marlin and other fish. The reefs themselves are practically teeming with numerous species of fish.

One of the main features of the islands is watching the migration routes of whales passing along the western shores of Tonga. From June to November along the eastern coast of Tongatapu and Ha'apai, and from July to November along the Vava'u coasts large herds of these sea giants catch the tourists' attention. At this time of year, thousands of fans of nature gather together on the shores and cliffs of Tonga. The underwater microphones record the voices of whales and dozens of boats, canoes and catamarans come up the water surface, right from where tourists can dive under the water exactly in the middle of the whale herds.

Fans of festivals, dancing and music will not be disappointed as there are numerous gay and colorful festivals organized in Tonga. The Pacific Festival "Blue Vava'u" is held in February, accompanied by the widest range of different events, including the diving competitions, "In search of treasures", triathlon and Cultural Fair. In March, at Nuku'alofa traditional triathlon competitions take place. There are many other traditional music festivals of the island, fascinating many tourists by their music, dancing and fun.

According to a local tradition, each visitor presented with a gift of roast suckling pig, but still the world-famous watermelons are the most delicious ones in Tonga.

Tonga hotels and restaurants are well-equipped and have all the facilities to make tourists' leisure here pleasant and comfortable with the help of the friendly and polite staff. Your leisure in Tonga will give you unforgettable impressions for a long time!
