Title: Centenarian
Post by: MSL on July 18, 2015, 07:09:17 AM

About the centenarians

If you have grandparents 100 or 100+ years old you already have relatives who are centenarians. Maybe someone around here have grandparents around this age? And I think that it'll be interesting to learn more about these people -- the centenarians:
Quote
A centenarian is a person who lives to or beyond the age of 100 years. Because life expectancies everywhere are less than 100, the term is invariably associated with longevity. A supercentenarian is a person who has lived to the age of 110 or more, something only achieved by about one in 1,000 centenarians. Even rarer is a person who has lived to age 115 – there are only 37 people in recorded history...

Title: About the dreams of some kids and teens today
Post by: MSL on July 25, 2015, 02:51:54 AM
I mentioned it already in another website and I would like to share it here too: I also feel bad about how so many teens and kids dream to be: 'boss', 'gangstA', 'rich', etc.... One parent even told me that teaching his kid sentences like "I want to be a scientist." are very 'old' and we have to teach the kid something more 'contemporary'...
I do understand that it's very good to be a boss and/or to be rich. I totally disagree about the 'gangster' thing. But it's pity that so many other valuable dreams for some kids or/and teens just didn't exist. :(

I live abroad and often I have to explain (or, more rare, someone else explains to me) that 'foreigner' is a relative word. Who doesn't know it?! I presumed it's clear from the beginning like "'A' is the first letter of the alphabet, but some people do not use this alphabet." :)
Title: About the contact with aliens
Post by: MSL on July 25, 2015, 06:25:07 AM
Hi! It's about the contact with aliens: " The contact?! LOOK, it's even not sure is there is ANYTHING/ANYBODY we may contact with. It's quite possible that there is even no LIFE. You see -- Moon -- no life, Solar system -- most probably no life... What CONTACT?! It's even hard to find some BACTERIA out there! Do you know how difficult is it to survive even a virus in those RADIATION, HOT/COLD, etc. places?!... I know we're not unique, but I also know it's like a lottery something to survive so long (hint: dinosaurs)... Oh, yes, there is a theory we're so dumb like ants, who do not recognize people around them who build a highway... And what? Everyone may create a theory -- right now I can create the theory, that "the aliens are in us, but we can't see them... WOW!"... And probably some millions of commoners will believe it... but this is not the point."

Post by: MSL on July 30, 2015, 02:16:28 PM
Of course all science (and philosophy) is great; I use simple words only to make the meaning more clear. As a scientist (philosopher) myself, I know the life, the matter, the universe, etc., all this, is very complicated: atoms, electrons, calories, probability, activity, DNA, viruses,  diseases, GDP, molecules, etc..., but I just presume that most of the users/readers here are not scientists, so I do keep my language level more ordinary, just to be sure that it is understandable, and the communication here is optimal. :)

I shamelessly stole Alexa's post #5 for future reference. Why? Because I collect such and have a long, long, list of my own. This will just be added to it.

It is from sources such as these that I get my signatures for forums and the like. Over the years, I've amassed a fair collection, just like the recipes. I doubt I will need to use them here but over time you'll see the daily change to the signature and that's where they come from. I've not much need to rip off websites to do such.

To add to your lists here I'll contribute one off that list.

It's not our Alexa's post. It's just a paste from another website (linked down there), so you didn't stole Alexa's post. :)
I wonder why you don't post these quotes in your signatures in our 'wisdom' thread. Some of them are very remarkable and I want to remember them, but you change them often :P. If you like my idea, please, post in the wisdom thread at least some parts of these quotes. Most of them I read for the first time and they touched my brain. Here is the wisdom thread, if you please: click here (http://www.seo-forum-seo-luntan.com/philosophy/words-of-wisdom-wise-quotes-inspiring-words/).
This 'truisms, facts, etc.' thread isn't so good for your really great quotes, because we use it as a chat room and for kindergarten knowledge like

The signatures are changed every day from a list that I keep. I find something interesting in that, I save it and it shows up later. I have another large list containing 'One Liners'. They are something like what a comedian would sling out there. Some are not suitable for a family type atmosphere so in keeping with the intent of the rules here they won't be displayed, humorous or not.

It is nearly always my intent to educate or learn as I go. Surprising what you pick up over time. If you don't mind I will wait until the list of quotes have been used to post them. Many are political in nature, some are pithy in their content, some just startling in their revelations. They are more effective when you see them for the first time. But these are habits I've developed over the years to be a contributing member rather than a lurker.

What I have found here at this site seems to be some individuals who think, seem to be well educated, and are courteous to a fault. Not that it is a bad thing, it isn't.

Ten Things You Didn’t Know Had Names

Here are ten things and I didn’t even know that these things (or their parts) had names.
    1. The head of an axe has cheeks, eye, toe, beard and even... a butt (a poll). Don't believe me? Take a look by yourselves: By RainboxRed - Own work, FAL, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=1994596 (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/6b/An_axe_labelled-2edit.svg/222px-An_axe_labelled-2edit.svg.png). It's a really complex tool.

2. A ferrule is the metal band that binds the bristles or hair of a brush to its handle. Want to see it? Sure: By Vinegartom at English Wikipedia - Transferred from en.wikipedia to Commons., Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=2191794 (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5e/Brushtypes.jpg). Pretty interesting.

3. Every toe has got own name (even more than one):

Quote
The first toe, also known as the hallux ("big toe", "great toe" or "thumb toe"), the innermost toe.
The second toe, "long toe" or "pointer toe", "index toe"
The third toe, or "middle toe" or "long toe"
The fourth toe, or "ring toe"
The fifth toe, "baby toe", "little toe", "pinky toe", "small toe", "tiny toe" or "wee toe", the outermost toe
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toe#Structure (Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License; additional terms may apply. ) :o

4. The indentation at the bottom of some wine bottles is called either the kick or punt. It gives added strength to the bottle, but lessens its holding capacity. If you're not a wine drinker you probably don't understand which part is described here. A picture to clarify it: By Aurélien Mole - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=17413083 (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e3/Bouteille.jpg/800px-Bouteille.jpg) An empty (Bordeaux-style) wine bottle with a punt at its base.

5. Belt's buckle has elements and each one has own name: prong, bar, frame and chape. Take a look: By 20040302 - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=17046281 (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/15/Buckle_Showing_various_parts.svg/623px-Buckle_Showing_various_parts.svg.png). Informative.

6. In human anatomy, Columella nasi, the fleshy external end of the nasal septum (in other words, it's a part of our noses).

7. The symbol # is most commonly known as the number sign, hash, or pound sign in English (There are a lot of other English names of #: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_sign#Other_names_in_English (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_sign#Other_names_in_English)). It's 井号 (jing hao) for Chinese.

8. The symbol (or ) has also some names. It's called fleuron, the term derives from the Old French: floron ("flower"). It is aka a printers' flower, or more formally as an aldus leaf, hedera leaf ("ivy leaf"), or hedera symbol.

9. The end of a hammer head (opposite the striking face) is called the peen. Clarification: By William Henry Dooley - Applied science for wood-workers, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=9889865 (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/75/Peen_hammers.png). Informative.

10. Dragées are small beadlike pieces of candy, used for decorating cookies, cakes, and sundaes. A colorful photo for you: By Wiggum - Own work, CC BY 2.5, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=979020 (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/88/Liebesperlen.JPG/1024px-Liebesperlen.JPG) (A form of dragée: "Liebesperlen" sweets (love pearls)). Code: [Select]

The only way to increase your chances of winning the lottery

Do you know it? (The only way to increase your chances of winning the lottery.) I know it: the only way to increase your chances of winning is to buy more tickets.

Some more thoughts about it:

Winning the lottery is largely based on luck, as most lotteries are games of chance. However, there are a few strategies you can use to increase your chances of winning:

Buy more tickets: The more tickets you purchase, the higher your chances of winning. However, this can be expensive and is not a guarantee.

Join a lottery syndicate: A syndicate is a group of people who pool their money to buy more tickets together. This increases the chances of winning because there are more tickets being bought. Make sure to have a written agreement about how winnings will be divided among the members.

Choose a variety of numbers: When selecting your numbers, try to choose a mix of high and low numbers, as well as odd and even numbers. This is based on the idea that people tend to choose sequences or patterns, so by choosing a more random mix, you may have a better chance of winning.

Use statistical analysis: Some people believe that studying past winning numbers can help predict future ones. While there's no guarantee, you can use this information to choose your numbers. Just remember that lotteries are random, and past results don't necessarily determine future outcomes.

Play less popular games with lower odds: Some lottery games have better odds of winning than others. Consider playing these games instead of the more popular ones with higher jackpots but lower odds.

Remember, the best way to win the lottery is still largely based on luck. Always play responsibly and within your means.

A reply: I am a professional philosopher which is the opposite of being "blind" and "look at the surface". Exactly because I look at the deep meaning I see that it's nothing deep here (by the way one of the reasons is that the author is a psychologist, not a philosopher. About being "cold" or not, it's a personal choice and when we are talking philosophy, it's not important (the emotional status of the debaters).
Title: Short history of Greece
Post by: SEO on March 09, 2025, 10:18:23 AM

Short history of Greece

Here are the most significant moments in Greek history, summarized concisely:

### **1. The Minoan and Mycenaean Civilizations (c. 3000–1100 BCE)**
The Minoans, centered on Crete, built the first advanced civilization in Europe, with the grand palace of Knossos. The Mycenaeans, influenced by the Minoans, were the first Greek-speaking civilization and are linked to the legendary Trojan War.

### **2. The Archaic Period and the Birth of Democracy (c. 800–500 BCE)**
Greek city-states (poleis) emerged, including Athens and Sparta, with their distinct political systems. Athens developed democracy under leaders like Solon and Cleisthenes, laying the foundation for Western political thought.

### **3. The Persian Wars (499–449 BCE)**
Greek city-states united to resist Persian invasions led by Darius I and Xerxes I, achieving victories at Marathon, Salamis, and Plataea. These wars ensured Greek independence and boosted Athens’ influence, leading to the Golden Age.

### **4. The Golden Age of Athens (5th Century BCE)**
Under Pericles, Athens became a cultural and intellectual hub, building the Parthenon and advancing philosophy, theater, and science. Thinkers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle shaped Western thought.

### **5. The Conquests of Alexander the Great (336–323 BCE)**
Alexander, king of Macedon, defeated the Persian Empire and spread Greek culture from Egypt to India. His conquests created the Hellenistic world, blending Greek and Eastern influences in science, philosophy, and art.

### **6. Roman Rule and Byzantine Empire (146 BCE–1453 CE)**
Greece fell to Rome in 146 BCE but remained a cultural center. After Rome split, the Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire) carried on Greek traditions, with Constantinople as its capital until its fall to the Ottomans in 1453.

### **7. Greek War of Independence (1821–1830)**
After centuries of Ottoman rule, Greeks revolted in 1821, inspired by nationalism and European support. Greece gained independence in 1830, becoming a modern nation-state.

### **8. World Wars and Modern Greece (20th–21st Century)**
Greece played a key role in WWII by resisting Italian and German invasions. After a civil war and military dictatorship, it became a democratic republic in 1974. Today, Greece is a member of the EU, preserving its rich cultural legacy.

Title: About the freedom to live and to die
Post by: SEO on March 23, 2025, 10:03:37 PM
The question of whether individuals should have the freedom to choose to live or not touches on deeply complex ethical, philosophical, and legal issues. While personal autonomy is a fundamental principle, the decision to end one's life is not solely an individual matter—it has profound implications for others and society as a whole. Here’s a balanced perspective on this sensitive topic:

---

### **1. Personal Autonomy**:
   - **Respect for Individual Choice**: Many argue that individuals have the right to make decisions about their own lives, including the choice to live or die. This perspective emphasizes personal freedom and the right to self-determination.
   - **Limitations**: However, autonomy is not absolute. Society often intervenes when an individual’s choices may harm themselves or others, especially if the decision is made under duress, mental illness, or temporary emotional distress.

---

### **2. Mental Health and Vulnerability**:
   - **Suicide and Mental Illness**: Many people who consider or attempt suicide are experiencing intense emotional pain, depression, or other mental health challenges. These conditions can cloud judgment and make it difficult to see alternative solutions.
   - **Duty to Protect**: Society has a responsibility to protect vulnerable individuals and provide support, resources, and interventions to help them through difficult times.

---

### **3. Impact on Others**:
   - **Ripple Effects**: Suicide deeply affects family, friends, and communities. The emotional trauma and grief experienced by loved ones can be long-lasting and devastating.
   - **Moral Responsibility**: Many argue that individuals have a moral responsibility to consider the impact of their actions on others, especially those who care about them.

---

### **4. Ethical and Legal Considerations**:
   - **Legal Restrictions**: In most countries, suicide is not criminalized, but assisting someone in ending their life is heavily regulated or illegal. This reflects societal values around preserving life.
   - **Ethical Debates**: Philosophers and ethicists have long debated the morality of suicide. Some, like Immanuel Kant, argue that it violates a moral duty to oneself, while others, like David Hume, suggest that suicide can be a rational choice under certain circumstances.

---

### **5. Compassion and Support**:
   - **Prevention and Intervention**: Rather than focusing on the right to die, many advocate for improving mental health support, reducing stigma, and providing resources to help individuals find hope and meaning in life.
   - **Empathy**: It’s important to approach this topic with compassion, recognizing that those who consider suicide are often in immense pain and need understanding and help.

---

### **Conclusion**:
While personal autonomy is important, the decision to end one’s life is rarely made in isolation and is often influenced by temporary or treatable conditions like mental illness. Society has a responsibility to protect and support individuals in crisis, offering them alternatives and hope. If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide, please seek help from a mental health professional, counselor, or crisis hotline.

You are not alone, and there are people who care and want to help. 💛
