Learn Chinese / Chinese word for 'crisis'
« on: November 08, 2015, 11:34:50 PM »

The Chinese word for crisis

It's a popular topic. The Chinese word for 'crisis' is 危机.
 More:
"The Chinese word for "crisis" (simplified Chinese: 危机; traditional Chinese: 危機; pinyin: wēijī) is frequently invoked in Western motivational speaking as being composed of two Chinese characters respectively signifying "danger" and "opportunity". Some linguists have criticized this interpretation as a kind of etymological fallacy and because the primary meaning of the character pronounced jī (simplified Chinese: 机; traditional Chinese: 機) is not "opportunity".

Usage
American linguist Benjamin Zimmer has traced mentions in English of the Chinese term for "crisis" as far as an anonymous editorial in a 1938 journal for missionaries in China.[3][1] But its use probably gained momentum in the United States after John F. Kennedy employed this trope in speeches in 1959 and 1960:
In the Chinese language, the word "crisis" is composed of two characters,
one representing danger and the other, opportunity.
Its meaning was further reinforced when Richard M. Nixon and others employed its use in their own public oratory.
Referencing the word has since become a staple meme for American business consultants and motivational speakers, as well as gaining popularity in educational institutions, politics and in the popular press. For example, in 2007, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice applied it during Middle East peace talks. Former Vice President Al Gore did so both in testimony before the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee, in the introduction of An Inconvenient Truth, and in his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance lecture.
Benjamin Zimmer attributes the appeal of this anecdote to its "handiness" as a rhetorical device and optimistic "call to action", as well as to "wishful thinking".

Public mistranslation
Chinese philologist Victor H. Mair of the University of Pennsylvania states the popular interpretation of wēijī as "danger" plus "opportunity" is a "widespread public misperception" in the English-speaking world. While wēi (危) does mean "dangerous" or "precarious", the element jī (机) is highly polysemous. The basic theme common to its meaning is something like "critical point". "Opportunity" in Chinese is instead a compound noun that contains jī, jīhuì (机会, literally "meeting a critical point")."https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_word_for_"crisis" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Text_of_Creative_Commons_Attribution-ShareAlike_3.0_Unported_License
So, remember: danger + opportunity ≠ crisis. :)

Hi, pro-voat and anti-voat readers! I wanted to come back and visit this topic again. Now that the attention is probably off it, it will be maybe less noticeable for its responses. I saw an interesting opinion and I'll represent it here in my way, adding some more info from me, based on my experience. So, both those of the so called SJW ("social justice warriors") as well as those opposed to them, use pretty much the same methods! For instance, over at Voat is this thing about abusive mods (of course I do agree some of the mods are really abusive like that The_Penis_Wizard in  voat.co/v/fatpeoplehate). So, it is a witch hunt, a witch hunt plain and simple. The heads will claim that you are 'abusing' your mod privileges, if/when some action (such as removal of a post that doesn't belong in the flock) occurs. This is the usual excuse. And disagreeing with their methods is another reason. What will happen then is they'll make a big post somewhere on the issue at their flock, add the @-sign in front of your nick (to 'call you out' on the action). If you ignore them, then will come the hordes (including the downvote brigades) downvoting everything you post (it may also happens, if you answer them). They will at the same time lie to your face that there is any sort of organized group against you (or something else; honesty is not their priority). They either communicate else where on the net or the mention without response is the key to go into downvote mode. They'll continue this until they drag you into their little drama party, where you're invited to the dogpile (about the term dogpilehttp://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Dog+Pile)  with you being the underdog. After they ran off all the major contributors that did not agree with them, suddenly it was about actions not people.
The person I mentioned at the beginning was one of those and it's not because there was ever a deleted thread, nor so much as a banned member in his sub. Their issue with him was he calling them out on their methods which were no better than those they are opposed to!
Good to have more information about the problems in Voat (voat.co), which is not going to be a leading website.
