Yam is the common name for some species in the genus Dioscorea (family Dioscoreaceae). Dioscorea alata, also named cultivated yam, greater yam, white yam, water yam, winged yam, ten-months yam, Malacca yam, has a thin, twining, winged but spineless stem, broad leaves, and a shallow fibrous root system. The vine may reach a lenght of 2-30 m.
The roots are baked, boiled, roasted, fried, or used raw as a salad vegetable. The roots are a good source of carbohydrates. Tubers usually weigh 5-10 kg but up to 60 kg with variety of shapes and colors.
In Chinese medical science, they are good for lung, kidney and spleen.
When I search on internet, I remember that I ate them when I was a kid. We planted by ourselves but they were a little different, they were purple so they are purple yams. But I think they are from the same family.
