Art topic
Art is something that we all probably know more or less. I'm thinking how much some kids may like this picture. I think when I was a kid I liked these pictures very much. Natural feeling -- dragonflies, field, sun with smile, lovely scarecrow... I think it's very suitable to develop some art feeling in the children.

This is how you may make here your pictures smaller, for example:
In this case the only change was to add after the '[img' and before ']' these 2: width=640 height=480: [img width=640 height=480]here is the link to the photograph or to the picture[/img]
. A simple BB code. Hope it's useful for you all! :)

Thank you. Call me lazy because I didn't resize and rehost this image. Since my right click menu doesn't work here I could not get a size that fits from image properties.
I think nothing of resizing images as it is part and parcel to doing graphics. I'll take your image size you've mentioned and will redo new images when I start making them again. Appreciate your assistance.

I like big pictures and I don't mind to scroll left-right and/or up-down. It was only a helpful hint for everyone who wish to resize, because this code option isn't very obvious here.
About the right click -- I noticed a content theft and we disabled it (the right click) via special code. It makes stealing content more difficult. I saw some other websites use the same method.
On-topic now: Who is the girl? (Is she a copy of some popular already heroine or your own creature?)
-
I do 3D graphics. This was all done on my computer. The girl, the pose, the lights, the background, etc. Nothing you see has a real thing in real life. It takes gobs of time to do, lots of programs, and then conversion from 3D to 2D called rendering that depends on your computer horsepower as to how well it's done and how long it takes to do it so that you can see the image without the software. What makes it so computer resource intensive is that in the process the software calculates light beam bounces and determines the shade or tint a color should be. It is not unusual to see a 10 hour render at high resolutions.
I broke my graphics computer when I fell on it, broke a USB that shorted out and killed the computer. I have just gotten another but have yet to put in a few hard drives, install programs, and get back up to speed with them.
This stuff is like an onion. Easy to start out with but the more you know and the more you want to do the deeper into learning you go as the layers reveal themselves.

And this is how it looks with out the textures as what is known as a wireframe in the final image. I posted this one in particular because it demonstrates it was CG (computer graphics) and not a photo or something taken from someone else. Only the maker has the wireframe because it's not interesting enough to post as an image usually.

Hot girl, I suppose! If you have to provide some handsome men art here it will be perfect. 8)

Yes, especially with the background, looks pretty real. Thumb up!

+1 about the hot male art! :P :P

For the ladies, I'm sorry but guys just don't do it for me, if you know what I mean. Still there is always room for more to learn to do this sort of stuff. It does have a steep learning curve, fair warning.
If you have a computer farm, it can even be animated. But those are usually far beyond the typical home computer abilities in any reasonable time frame.
This stuff is like a movie set. You have the models, the stage, the scenery, lights, cameras; well you get the idea.
-

I called this one 'Oh Shit' because that would have been my reaction.
-
It's very futuristic, I like it. I'd like to know: here also everything is 100% artificial? What I wonder is about the sky/clouds -- are they from some sky photograph, or you made them all via the software?
-
Absolutely, 100% of what you see does not exist in real life. Every bit of it is computer made. If you look very closely you will see one of my screwups in the wave. But I have to call your attention to it or you wouldn't notice it.
There are limitations with what you have to work with. In making this image all is not as it seems. Notice the crest of the wave. Look very, very, closely, and you will see faintly a long extended oval, where the wave at the crest has a different look to it. The draw back here is that you have to have something to put the texture on so that water looks like water and not like tree bark. The oval is from a circle that has been tilted and stretched to fit right there at the crest. You can see the oval if you look very closely.

I guess everything is completely artificial as usual in your art works? The grass and the flowers are... just... hard to believe they're unreal... Astonishing! :o
-
I guess everything is completely artificial as usual in your art works?
Absolutely 100% correct. Nothing you see in the image is real. You will notice in the screenshot at the bottom, is a render near finished. It lists the time remaining, screen resolution it is rendering at, and the amount of polygons in this particular scene that make up what looks to be grass, trees, and other items in the image. From time to time I include these for two purposes. One is that it ensures if I get close in an image so it fools the eye, you can tell it's not real; it's CGI. The other is in it's own way it verifies I was the artist as that is the only one who will have that info. So it wasn't taken from someone else's work as they would not display that info in the image.

This is my attempt to create the look of an old ancient piece of pipe. It was made totally in a photoeditor for the image and then textured on to a primitive cylinder in a 3D program. The cylinder gives it the pipe effect and before it was done that way was just a flat image.
The image is a series of layers, each doctored to create this particular effect.
-
It looks exactly as an old ancient piece of pipe. How long does it take to complete an image as the one with the fence, the woman and "The War of the Worlds" thing above? :)
-
Sometimes you get inspired and it takes a couple of days, sometimes it takes weeks. This sort of stuff eats time like you would not believe. A good part of it depends on your abilities, knowledge, and skill, as to how deep into this sort of stuff you can go. That in turn determines how long it takes. For every image you have been shown in this thread are probably 4 or 5 I didn't save. I don't usually save those I am not happy with the outcome of.
Some of my early ones you can see a distinct lack of that knowledge displayed in the appearance of the image. You never learn it all. You can get better than you were but you will never reach the end of knowing it all. (or at least I won't) The complexity of each program is enormous. I may swap an image between two to five different graphics programs to get the desired effects. Sometimes they come out right, sometimes they don't. Sometimes just the lighting setup is enough to make or break an image. Do you use an environmental light like the sun as your main lighting, or do you use the 3 point standard photograph illumination? How wide is the light to be if you use a pin point light? Where should it start illumination and where should it end? Should it cast shadows? Should it be another color other than white? Should it be a pin point light, a light box, a spot light, or a battery of them? How strong should the light source be? Should you use gel filters or not? Where should you place them? All of this only deals with the light source to illuminate the scene. There's cameras, pose, the scene set up, just to name a few, and every one of them just as complicated as the lights, if not more.
Here is one I didn't do well. It's over lit, the posing is poor, the whole thing doesn't fool the eye at all. In my eyes it is a total failure beyond the learning experience.

At once I noticed this one is like 'not Mojo's art', but I suppose that now when you're more skillful, you may edit/re-do this and your old images? Or once done it's not easy to be improved anymore? (Probably a lame question, but I hope it's a useful question as far as we're trying here to enjoy and to educate and/or learn at the same time. :) )
-
...you may edit/re-do this and your old images? Or once done it's not easy to be improved anymore?
Once I have created something, I never save anything beyond the images. Even the images are sizable taking sometime up to 10 megs just for the original image.
It simply takes too much data space to store multitudes of these on the hard drive. So you make your thing, delete the all the program's data in each graphics program and start again with something else. There's not a lot you can do image wise with the image other than photoedit. It takes the data in the graphics programs to change it. The data files for each image, in each program are usually sizable.
Most of the time it isn't worth the effort.
-
It became a very good Art thread 8) with different kinds of art and great contributions!
-
Yes. Totally different. The art of mine is simple and a kind of paradoxal... I still haven't a good definition about it. :P I have a new one ('art creation'). I'll upload it later. ;D

Maybe one of the ways to shed light on the creations is this series of images where I am making a glass that is used in a different image I will show you later.
The same process was used to create the jug in the final image in this post. A couple of times it's been asked if some part of the image is from a real photo. I do at times use backgrounds from a real photo, or use high detailed images to create the look of water, wood, or other items. But there are parts that the graphics programs themselves will recreate as far as the look of something. Glass is one that they will create without having to have an image to do so yourself.
Here is the first step, creating an out line.
Here the outline is filled out to create a full 3D subject.
Here the object has been textured to give it that 'look'.

The art of mine is simple and a kind of paradoxal...
My mother was at one time an art teacher. She had trained in college as an artist and then went on to Paris to learn dress design. She did not further her ambitions in this field as she became pregnant with me and got married instead. I was taught the value of reading at a young age with an appreciation of art as a side bonus.
During my younger years, I did learn somewhat to draw. But I never stayed at it and my drawings and doodles would look much the same as MSL's. Plus my interests diverged in other directions.
What I am saying here is I can draw no better than MSL. He has the advantage he's willing to show his... I'm not.

If I'm not wrong this is your 2nd tutorial (@mojo). Thank you so much! I'm not going to do this, but I like to have it in front of my eyes and I am sure there are many of the unique visitors around, who will really like it and use it. Good job.
-
Heyyyy, thanks a lot (including about the mother's story)! :) :) But I'd like to tell you a 'secret': all my drawings here I made during our private language lessons -- I want to cheer up the students and in 1-2 minutes I'm drawing something a bit funny, a bit meaningful. And, because it's 'a kind of' art, I'm posting it here (more content, you know :) + more fun). If I want really to draw, it will be a bit more prettier, but I'm not very good at it. :) I am much better in poetry and literature. But, thanks once again, for the good and encouraging words! Great people, great community!
-
If I'm not wrong this is your 2nd tutorial
They are not actually tutorials in the sense of 'this is how you do this'. In many places I have drawn what could charitably be called doubt as to actually being able to do images of this sort. So along the way I have captured screenshots from programs while in the making. It is my way to disarm those who would say one does not have the ability to do such. I never make the claim it is easy. I never make the claim that it is quick to do. One must have the dedication to stick with it and the love of doing so for surely for the hours it is not something that you could make a living at.
In some places quite frankly, I cheat. In others there is no substitute for doing it yourself if you want it as part of an image. The point is not that the viewer has to be intimate with the how to dos so much but rather for the appreciation of a finished image.
-
I got this idea a few seconds ago: combine your cooking/food hobby with this art-hobby at least once -- make an image of your favorite dish (or at least include it in some other image as a detail like: a table with some candles in some dark castle style room and this dish on the table; or just a romantic table in front of the sea, whatever...). I suggest it also with a bit of selfish interest ;): I want to see a pretty art-image (as the other above) of your food. If you like this idea, please have a try, because I'm 99.99% sure you're able to create something astonishing. :) (And, of course, if someday you create something like this, or you already created and in fact it's an old idea, please share it here!)
-
There are some technical difficulties with what you are suggesting and I will have to think this one over on how to over come them and still produce a believable image.
One of them is the last computer I did this on, I broke. I lost my balance, fell on the computer (cracked a rib in the process), broke the USB port which then shorted and fried the computer.
I now have a new one to replace it but it took around a year to save up for it, to make up my mind to spend the money for it (as they are not cheap for this level of computer) and then actually do it. I have removed the old HDs from the old graphics computer and installed them in this new one but have yet to install the programs. I made one run at doing so and the program I tried to install didn't like the newer Win 10 OS. I think I might have made an error in the installation process. At any rate I uninstalled it and haven't tried again to reinstall again. Putting them all back on this new computer appears it is going to be challenging.
For another what I post is deceptive to the viewer. In this I mean that they see the ones that came out better. You don't see the 20 that didn't make the grade. One of the other challeging parts of what you suggest, is that when you make something in one of these programs, it doesn't look at first like what you see in the image. For instance in the pipe image shown (or the glass image for that matter) I've shown you the wireframe and the completed image. There is another view where you look at it from the solid view as you make it. Everything is always modeled in a default plastic material. Mostly either white or gray. So you make a tree, it doesn't have color to it, doesn't look like a tree, it looks like it just came out of a plastic mold in the shape of a tree. To get it to look like a tree, you have to go in and change the appearance of the various parts. This requires two things (not to mention a lot of patience). It requires either you make the texture that will give it the look of leaves or bark, or you take a high resolution photo of what you want it to look like from something in real life, photoedit it to what it is going to be in the image, and then unfold the object from it's 3D configuration, sort of paste the image on that unfolded object, and then refold it, back to it's original shape. How much and how often depends on the complication of your model, the horse power of your computer, and your abilities to actually pull it off.
Somethings can be done without all that, such as the skies you were questioning about. Depending on what sky you want, some programs can generate unique sky scenery. In this case you mention, I'd have to take at least 3 photos of say the chicken for the different angles, photo edit the chicken itself for one piece, model it, unfold it, attach the image, refold it, and move on to the next piece and repeat. Same to be done with the bowl, the table, and all other objects in it. Some can be cheated with as there are already existing ones. But most are not of high enough resolution to pull off believable.
I could probably pull off what you suggest. It's the time factor that would kill me in doing this.

May I ask something else? What is the easiest object to create and what is the hardest?
This one is an easy one to answer in the sense of methods. The most basic easy to create items are what are known as primitive geometric shapes, such as a cylinder, cone, sphere, or box. The reason they are so easy to create is most 3D programs have them as defaults where you just click on a button and then you determine the width, length, and depth, by mouse dragging. The hardest are free hand objects (such as the glass shown eariler) where you make the shape and often have to do several of these, attach them to each other, to actually make the shape you are after. After all that, it still looks like plastic.

My comment: the most 'real' (realistic) here is the earring. Completely as a nephrite earring. :)
-
If I may add a small suggestion: I think the skin of the woman will be more realistic, if there is at least one mole. I never met in my life a white woman without some moles on face or/and neck or/and shoulders. Many of the yellow women also have a few moles on body.
I hope it's a constructive idea (suggestion). :)
-
My comment: the most 'real' (realistic) here is the earring.
Thank you. I worked a while at modeling that ear ring and then trying to get the texture right so it might look like something similar to jade. Truth be known, if you could see the other side of the head, there is only one ear ring. But as you see it, you would assume to be one of a matched pair. This is part of the fooling of the eyes that the mind accepts as well. It's dang hard to pull that off, as simple as it sounds.
I think the skin of the woman will be more realistic, if there is at least one mole.
I could easily do that and would probably do it through the photoeditor after the image creation for the easiest way to do it. I have some other images I will not be showing here due to the rules of the site. They don't belong in a family forum, art not withstanding, due to their nature. In one, I add a tattoo to the lower back after the image is made rather than part of the 3D process.
-
Yes. Mole or, as Mojo said a tattoo, is bringing more realism.
And an off-topic about the quotes (Mojo's quotes, because he is still learning about this software and I like helping him as much as I can and when I can).
Mojo, I edited only your quotes above and now they're fine. Here are the 2 basic quotes' codes, which I'm sure you will learn soon, because they're very easy and logical:
1. If you just want to have a quote: [quote]Here comes the quote.[/quote]
. It will look as: Here comes the quote.
2. If you want to quote a concrete username like 'Internet', 'Alexa' or 'MSL' above the only change you have to add in the code above is an equals sign = and after it to insert the name of the one you quoted. For example I quote you and I must make it in this way: [quote=mojo]Thank you. I worked a while at that[/quote]
and it will look as: Thank you. I worked a while at that
Resume: simple quote: [quote]...[/quote]
; concrete quote: [quote=THE NAME OF THE PERSON]...[/quote]
If you have some question about it, ask and don't worry at all. (Because it's useful not only for you, but for all of the newbies, the beginners and, of course, for the development of this forum. One of the postulates of the ethical optimization /SEO/ is: unique useful content. And when I help you I do generate exactly this unique+useful content. You're doing the same all time long, so it's all tit-for-tat, i.e. in fair. /I hope 'tit-for-tat' hasn't some negative meaning, because I use it as 'in fair' in this context./) :)
At the end, on-topic (art quote): Art is magic delivered from the lie of being truth.

:)

Thank you for the edits. I am the world's worst at not proof reading what I've texted. Most of the time I have the habit of posting and then reading for mistakes, not before. But without the edit function I can't do that and must do the proof read; a personal failing. I'm learning but sometimes the auto capture by the forum software of the original format throws me off if I don't take a look at the finished post as it will look and just go ahead and post it.
It's not that I don't know better, it's that often I don't take the time before hitting the post button, that creates these lacks of ending tags in my posts.
Again, my thanks for the edit; no complaints here.
-
Of course it's not a problem (you know that the level in many other forums is worse than what we see here), so I also will give you an idea about it, not because I think you have some problem in posting, but because I think I can give my 50 cents in this field: at the beginning I haven't the habit to click the 'Preview' button (which is next to 'Post'). Now I got it and I never post without 'Preview'. Clicking 'Preview', waiting a few seconds (1-5 usually, I don't know) it's fetching preview and then up there (above the 'Post reply') I can see my ready to be post. Well, it's probably a bit time consuming, but often I can add something more useful or at least something to emphasis, something to color up, something to improve a bit. So, I like this 'Preview' function here and I use it in other websites, when there is available.
(This is not only a good idea for you, it's a good idea for everyone, especially for some of our optimization-oriented (SEO-oriented) members from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and some other countries around the world, where the native language isn't English and... when they post in English here, for them is better to use more this 'Preview' button. :) )
(I also add it without complaints and with a very positive and friendly feeling to them and, of course, to our good online friend -- Mojo! A positive and creative ART-emoticon for all of you: (http://i40.tinypic.com/1zq7sw6.jpg) (http://web.archive.org/save/_embed/http://i40.tinypic.com/1zq7sw6.jpg))
-
I'm slowly coming around to this idea that I need to use both preview panes before posting and am having to break a life time habit with on line posting to forums. Given time I'll succeed at this. ...err I hope.

This is really very artistic. The 1st association (of somebody as me, who got only primary level art literacy) is Auguste Rodin's 'Éve' ((https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f5/Auguste_Rodin%2C_1881-ca.1899%2C_%C3%89ve%2C_bronze%2C_Jardin_des_Tuilleries%2C_Paris._DSC09221.jpg/800px-Auguste_Rodin%2C_1881-ca.1899%2C_%C3%89ve%2C_bronze%2C_Jardin_des_Tuilleries%2C_Paris._DSC09221.jpg)By I, Coldcreation, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=25831356)
and a bit 'The thinker'.
I'm telling you this, because I think your art is too pretty and too amazing to be nameless. Here comes the question: What's the name of this image? Do you name your images or you prefer them nameless and expecting people to call them someday?
-
Oh, if something from Mojo's art is really nameless, I'm ready to give many suggestions; my pleasure, when it comes to so attractive and aesthetic creations! 8)
-
I've only given names to two of them. The one with the jug in the ocean with a cyclops and the one with the tsunami wave in it.
The one with the statue was done for a background but never used it. The idea was to have the actor/model in front so that the statue served as background fill in.
-
Then it can be named 'The Statue'. :)
-
Then it can be named 'The Statue'. (http://www.seo-forum-seo-luntan.com/Smileys/blue/smiley.gif)
Sounds good to me. Never was really good at naming things.

Yes, indeed. Sometimes the simplest names are the best. This is the one and only statue image art you showed here. In this context 'The Statue' is a very good and unique name. 8)

Wasn't too happy with this one. Got lazy and didn't change the background to be something more interesting. This resulted in a sort of blah first impression.
-
Well, if this background is representing something Roman, we may call it: "Dance in Rome".
I like it and, if I have to give some suggest, it will be only one: I think that the only 'fake' thing is the window: add some blue sky and a cloud at least. My favorite (if I can 'draw' this kind of pictures) will be: the sky with the cloud, a flying bird and seaside.
Another suggestion: a stained glass https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stained_glass.

Here is one where I've used a photo someone took of a building in New York. That's where the back ground comes from this one. I can't just use any image. It has to be high resolution in order to look correct.

If Mojo wants my friendly critique, here we go: I think all is good, because of the light and shadows, except the object in the hands of the android, because it's too 2D. I wish this object to be more 3D (via more light on it, or in another way, I don't know, because I never use this kind of software, but I'm sure Mojo knows what I mean, and I am sure he is able to make it more 3D, because many of his objects are very 3D, i.e. very real looking). This is from my "art consumer"'s point of view, of course and I give it 9 of 10 points.
-
...except the object in the hands of the android, because it's too 2D.
It's a valid critique. Had I changed the color of the object, or changed the lighting, and then presented it at an angle to show the printer as being an office printer, it would have looked much better than from the angle it is now. My problem with this one was the robot. In order to show his face, looking at you, I had to go for this particular angle. Too much to the rear or too much to the front and the robot's face is hidden from view. This problem is what makes the printer in the image look 2D. I should have altered the material of the printer, put it back, but you're looking at around 10 hours to produce this image once it was completed, in the rending process. So you kind of have to balance your time against is it worth the change. If I was getting paid for the image it would have been worth the time.
Much of what you see in these images, is just what I want you to see. Every thing is staged to fool the eye. Sometimes I pull it off, sometimes I don't. The very hardest thing in doing these is to see those mistakes yourself. Others spot them right away, such as yours but to the maker of it, you're sort of blind to these faults and it is very hard often to point at exactly what it is that disturbs the eye. This blindness to the faults is not just one of my own. All I know that do these sorts of images have the same problem.
-
If I was getting paid for the image it would have been worth the time.
You are so right. Mojo. You can search market for your images, they worth it. I think they worth to be advertised more in front of targeted auditory. I mean the targeted audience advertising; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Targeted_advertising.
Eh, btw, the wheels of the printer are totally 3-D. :)
-

If you would like to take a try at this yourself, go here (http://www.apophysis.org/) and download the program and try it for yourself. It's not very complicated to use at all. You should be up, running, and doing your own in a half hour or less.
-
It's a real expressionism, Mojo. I'm not kidding, people! Look at a similar classic example of expressionism:
(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/92/Fighting_Forms.jpg)Public Domain, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?curid=10861881
Franz Marc, Fighting Forms, 1914.
-
Yes. Seems Mojo is the same good in both: realism and expressionism. We can admire artists like him, because it's easy someone to be good in only one style, but it's really something to see an artist good in 2 styles.
-

There was method to my madness in showing the results of the Apophysis program. In this image the background was originally one such that I've run through a photoeditor to create.
-
You know, my major is 'philosophy', not 'art', so I'm not sure how to describe it according to the real art-science, but my view is that it's a very good mix of realism and expressionism. If I have to choose your best work (from all you posted here), I'll surely vote this one to be in the TOP 3 best!
I'm trying to figure out a good name for it, but I can't find something that can reflect its beauty, so, just a suggestion, until someone finds better one: A temptation in the endless harmony.

Cool, but... why one of the yellow parts of this flower is a bit transparent? It shows that it's thinner or? What is the original idea behind it?
-
The idea is to suggest they are thin. Notice that not all of them are transparent. Only one, because it gives you the impression for all without actually doing all. Because you see one, you accept that all are that way.
Fooling the eye into believing is hard.

Very realistic mountain tops, sky, water, reflection... Admiration!
-
I'm afraid the background on this one I didn't do. It's a wallpaper from long ago when I was just getting my feet on the ground with this stuff. Wasn't at that time able to do the back grounds. That came later.
-
Ow, thank you for telling me that! Then maybe it's a background that is a real photo (photoshopped probably, because it's too clear to be 100% real)? Btw, the reflection (on the water) in the right side seems not real and this is why I guess it may be a digital product.

Construction or deconstruction? That's the question. :)
-
Construction or deconstruction? That's the question.
This reminds me of some nonsense my mother always used to say which goes like this:
TB or not to be, that is the conception. Can consumption be done about it?
Of cough, of cough.
-
:) Sweet. But I really think that people's perception (interpretation) may be in two ways: some will think the parts are flying away (deconstruction); others will think the parts are coming to build up the woman (construction). And it's good that you created something that allows different interpretations. It's also useful as a sort of Rorschach test (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rorschach_test).
So, in a word, it's a philosophical and psychological art product. Its philosophical value I can compare with another one (which I also like): "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" ("This is not a pipe") -- (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b9/MagrittePipe.jpg)By Image taken from a University of Alabama site, "Approaches to Modernism": [1], Fair use, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?curid=555365
