Upon seeing this thread title I thought I was going to view something meaningful, however it seems like I don't really see what I was expecting. What is the mistake that you made that you want others to avoid?

Thanks for you honesty, Arold! I do respect it! You deserved my honest answer, as well.
1. It's meaningful (I gave a link to our stats). I wanted to say that in so many years of development this forum (in 4-5 languages, tons of fresh and unique content, some white SEO, etc.) we got almost nothing. (Yes, I know some other forums are worse than this one, because they haven't get even 10% of our traffic, incomes, etc., I don't want to describe details, but I think you got it.)
2. In a word: "I/we overspent and underachieved."

In fact most of the websites around the world are not successful. This website is better than many (most) others! It's not bad, really... And I think it's getting better and better! 8)
