SEO is a technique which helps search engines find and rank your site higher than the millions of other sites in response to a search query. SEO thus helps you get traffic from search engines. search engines crawl the Web to see what is there. This task is performed by a piece of software, called a crawler or a spider (or Googlebot, as is the case with Google). Spiders follow links from one page to another and index everything they find on their way.

Don't waste your time or money submitting your site to 1000 search-engines and directories. Search engines have their own crawls and will find your site and rank it according to your sites seo, content etc.
Don't target common keywords like "real estate" or "shoes". Target more specific keywords like "blue size ten running shoes".
Don't use the same page titles, file titles, keywords or key phrases on every page. Make sure you have variety in every page so that it all original.

I do agree that we don't need it. But I should say that some crawlers are not that wise and they are not able to find your website for a very long time or never. That's why if you feel that the X or Y search engine is important, you must do it (submit the willing website).
Those more specific keywords like "blue size ten running shoes".
are called long-tails and you're completely right about them.

Hello everybody
SEO stands for "search engine optimization." It is the process of getting traffic from the free, organic, editorial or "natural" listings on search engines. All major search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing have such results, where web pages and other content such as videos or local listings are shown and ranked based on what the search engine considers most relevant to users.
