sure, they will improve your rankings significantly depending on how competitive they are, but if possible, search for deep link directories that allow you to submit around 5-10 of your inner pages as well to kill more birds at the same time.

-get high page rank back links
-link only in high quality websites
-link only in places where the pages are Indexed

Sometimes I think Google Adwords is better than SEO because in Google Adwords you have the option of targeting many keywords even a 1000 keywords at once rather than SEO which even getting one keyword to the top becomes a big problem.
